Greenville, S.C. -- Mady Riegel and Vanessa Aponte each netted second half goals to rally The Citadel to a 2-1 victory over preseason Southern Conference favorite Furman in women's soccer action on Friday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The loss dropped the Paladins to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in SoCon play, while The Citadel improved to 5-8-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the league.

Trailing 1-0 at the half in a match that was delayed two hours by rain prior to kickoff, The Citadel leveled the score at the 50:04 mark when Riegel fired a shot from near the penalty spot the was deflected back into her path.  Riegel's second effort trickled under goalkeeper Rose Hull and into the left-hand corner to tie the match at 1-1.

Less than six minutes later, Furman was whistled for a hand ball several yards outside the top of the box.  Aponte stepped up to hammer a free kick over the Paladin wall and into the left side of the net at 55:49 to give the Bulldogs the 2-1 advantage.

Furman, despite holding a 26-9 edge in shots and 14-2 advantage in shots on goal, could not crack The Citadel defense down the stretch.  Bulldog goalkeeper Naomi Carter, who finished with 13 saves, stopped several long range efforts from the Paladins over the final half hour and Jamie Alexander missed wide on a header at the left post with under 11 minutes remaining after Stephanie Devita dribbled around the defense to deliver a low cross.

The Paladins had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half when Alexander's shot from the top of the six yard box was saved, but caromed into the path of senior Kristin Fennegan, who tapped in for Furman's lone goal at the 34:09 mark.

Furman will look to rebound on Sunday when it hosts SoCon newcomer Mercer in a 2 p.m. contest at Stone Stadium.
