Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team kicks off its 2014 regular season when it hosts the Georgia State Panthers in a 12 p.m. contest on Friday at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Admission to Friday afternoon's season opener is free and free pizza will be provided to all fans in attendance while supplies last.
"We're thrilled to get the season underway and the team has been working hard to prepare for Georgia State," said 10th-year Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, who was named SoCon Coach of the Year in 2013. "We can't wait to have our alumni, fans and Furman students back at Stone Stadium."
The Paladins open the season as preseason favorites in the Southern Conference after posting a 17-4-2 overall record and 8-1-1 league mark en route to claiming the league's regular season and tournament crowns a year ago.
Furman returns all 11 starters from last season's squad, led by 2012 SoCon Player and Freshman of the Year Stephanie DeVita and 2013 SoCon Freshman of the Year Carlie Couch. DeVita has notched 34 goals over her first two seasons at Furman while Couch tallied 12 goals and five assists during her rookie season. Junior goalkeeper Rose Hull returns to the Paladin lineup after fashioning a 0.65 goals against average with seven shutouts last season.
