Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's soccer team will begin its quest for a Southern Conference title and NCAA Tournament berth when it hosts the sixth seeded Davidson Wildcats in the SoCon Women's Soccer Championship Quarterfinals on Sunday. Kickoff on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
The Paladins finished the regular season at 14-3-2 overall and 7-2-2 in SoCon play after Jamie Alexander netted a pair of goals, including the match-winning tally in double overtime, to give Furman a 3-2 victory at Wofford on Wednesday night. The 7-2-2 league mark secured Furman a third place finish in the SoCon standings and No. 3 seed for the league tournament. The triumph versus Wofford marked the 100th career victory for Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. Now in his eighth season as Furman head coach, Burr has posted a 100-55-13 overall record and 48-26-11 league mark.
Davidson enters tournament play at 7-9-3 overall and 5-5-1 in the SoCon after suffering a 1-0 loss at Georgia Southern in its regular season finale on Wednesday. The Wildcats, just 1-3-1 in their last five matches, dropped a 2-0 decision to Furman in Davidson, N.C., last Sunday. Sophomore Hannah Stanifer and freshman Stephanie DeVita, who ranks third overall and first among rookies in NCAA Division I soccer with 18 goals this season, scored for the Paladins in last week's shutout victory.
Furman holds a 19-8-3 advantage over Davidson in the all-time series between the schools and has won three consecutive meetings with the Wildcats, including a 2-1 triumph in Davidson in the opening round of last season's SoCon Tournament. Sunday's quarterfinal round match marks the ninth time the Paladins and Wildcats have met in SoCon postseason play with Furman having won the last six meetings. Davidson's only postseason triumph over Furman came in a 3-0 decision in the 1995 SoCon Championship Match.
The winner of Sunday's match advances to the SoCon Semifinals on Friday in Birmingham, Ala., where it will face the winner of Sunday's College of Charleston at Samford match. This year's SoCon Championship Match is set for Sunday, November 4, at 2 p.m. ET in Birmingham and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
