Greenville, S.C. -- Furman women's lacrosse opens the 2019 season on Saturday, welcoming High Point to Paladin Stadium for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
The Paladins are coming off an 8-11 2018, that included the Paladins' appearance in the first-ever Southern Conference women's lacrosse championship game. Furman fell to Mercer in that contest, but the Paladins won three games in the first year of Southern Conference play.
Furman returns three of the top four goal scorers from the 2018 team, including the top two goal scorers in Abby Shields (35) and Isabelle Walsh (27). Shields also turned in a team-high 24 assists in 2018, while Sophie Brennan and Morgan Franklin won a combined 113 draws last season and both return for the Paladins.
The Paladins were selected as the SoCon preseason favorites, in voting done by the league's head coaches, while Shields and Franklin were both named to the preseason All-Conference team. The two, along with Brennan, were voted as the captains of the 2019 season.
High Point was voted the Big South preseason favorite for 2019 and landed four players on the preseason All-Big South squad. Sophomore Abby Hormes was selected as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and senior Samantha Herman was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Saturday's game will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network. Fans can find video and live stat links on FurmanPaladins.com and can follow @FUWlax on Twitter for periodic game updates.
