Norfolk, Va. – Ashley Trice scored three goals, but it wasn't enough, as Old Dominion downed Furman, 9-6, on Sunday in Atlantic Sun action. The win moves the Monarchs to 8-2 on the season and 1-0 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Paladins to 6-5 and 1-1 in SoCon play.
Trice's three goals marked her fourth hat trick of the season, while Abby Shields, Meg Lingo, and Sophie Brennan each added one. Shields turned in a team-high two assists, while Sam Eckels won three draws and picked up a team-high four ground balls. Maggie Friel made seven saves in goal for the Paladins.
Old Dominion opened up a 3-0 lead in the game's first seven minutes of play, before the Paladins netted back-to-back goals by Trice and Brennan to cut the lead to 3-2 with 4:15 to go in the half. The Monarchs then used another 3-0 scoring run over the final minute of the first half and first four minutes of the second to push the lead to four at 6-2. The teams then traded goals for the remainder of the game, allowing Old Dominion to hang on for the 9-6 victory.
Furman returns to action next weekend, hosting Central Michigan and Detroit on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
