GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman head women's lacrosse coach Rachel Whitten has announced the election of team captains for the inaugural 2015 season.
Eckels, a Towson, Md., native, led her Loch Raven High School team to the finals of the state championships as a freshman and sophomore and to the semifinals as a junior and senior. Eckels was a four-year varsity starter in high school, as well as team captain and Coach's Award winner as a senior.
"Sam is a hard worker who likes to take risks defensively," said Whitten. "She has been working hard for a year and a half for Furman lacrosse and her passion for the sport and team come through on the field."
Herline, a Brentwood, Tenn., earned Academic All-American accolades as a junior at Brentwood High School. She was named to the TGLA All-State team in 2012 and to the all-region team in 2011 and 2012. Herline was a member of the National FCA High School Team and the Tennessee team at the Women's Divisional National Tournament in 2011 and 2012.
"Though she suffered a season ending injury, Hope has been a huge factor in pre-season," Whitten said. "Her positivity and excitement will be a huge asset for the team throughout the season."
Horine, a native of Towson, Md., led McDonogh School to a 91-game winning streak in her high school career, as well as back-to-back-to-back IAAM championships and #1 team in country and state rankings.
"Devon leads by example," said Whitten. "She is constantly working hard and brings the intensity level up at practice each time she steps on the field. She is a workhorse in the midfield and plays a big part at both ends of the field."
Furman opens its inaugural season on Wednesday, February 18 at 3:00 p.m. in Clinton, S.C. against Presbyterian.
