GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman head lacrosse coach Rachel Whitten has announced the addition of Gabi Wiegand to the women's lacrosse staff as an assistant coach.
"We are extremely excited for Gabi to join the Furman lacrosse staff," said Whitten. "She was an outstanding player the past couple years at Florida and on the national level. Her experience with building a strong program as a player will really help our athletes with the transition into Division 1. She knows what it takes to win and what it takes to bring a program to national prominence."
Wiegand, a native of Bay Shore, N.Y., is a recent graduate of the University of Florida, where she helped the Gators win the 2012 and 2013 ALC regular season championship. Wiegand was an ALC Player of the Week, a Womenslax.com National Player of the Week, and was named All-ALC Second Team and IWLCA Second-Team All-South Region. She also garnered SEC, ALC, and IWLCA Honor Roll accolades while at Florida.
Prior to her career at Florida, Wiegand spent two years at the University of Richmond, where she helped the Spiders win an A-10 regular season championship. She was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 Second Team member, twice named All-Tournament Team, and earned a place on the A-10 All-Rookie Team and the womenslax.com All-American Rookie Team.
"I am extremely excited to be an assistant coach for the woman's lacrosse program at Furman," said Wiegand. "It is an honor to be working alongside both Rachel (Whitten) and Amber (Falcone). Furman is a special place and I look forward to helping with the success of the program!"
A 2013 graduate of Florida, Wiegand earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology.
