Furman Golfers Drop Matches to Duke and Washington in Match Play

HOWEY IN THE HILLS, Fla. - Furman's 15th-ranked Lady Paladin golf team lost a pair of matches Monday in the Hooter's Collegiate Match Play Championship, falling 3-2-0 to both top-seeded Duke and fourth-seeded Washington at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.

The match against Duke, which was continued from Sunday when it was called due to darkness, was tied 2-2 after Lady Paladins Monique Gesualdi and Jenny Suh earned victories and Haley Gildea and Connor Atkinson, respectively, suffered defeats of 3 and 2 and 4 and 2. The team match came down to the number four spot, where Theresa Paik and Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh fought through four lead changes before Aazam-Zanganeh took the win 2 and 1 to give Duke the 3-2-0 victory.

In the afternoon match the Washington Huskies won matches one and five, while Furman's Jenny Suh and Theresa Paik took victories at numbers three and four to again stand tied with one match left to finish. Connor Atkinson led during nine of the 18 holes, but with the match all square, Washington's Sung Ea Lee won the last hole to earn the 1 up victory, and give the Huskies the 3-2-0 decision.

With two match play losses Furman ends its fall season and will not return to action until March 4, 2005, at the Lady Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
