First year Furman women's golf coach Jen Hanna picked up her inaugural career victory Sunday with a five stroke win over Mississippi State in the 35th annual Lady Paladin Invitational.
Furman carded a final round 304 to win its 14th Lady Paladin Invitational title and second in a row, with a three-round 894 total. "Our team has been through a lot the last few months," said coach Hanna referring to the loss of long-time Lady Paladin mentor Mic Potter, "but we are working hard and coming together and I am very proud of them."
MSU entered the final round in third place, 14 strokes behind the Lady Paladins, but the Bulldogs carded the low round of the day (296) to move into second, four strokes ahead of TCU who placed third at 903. Michigan State entered the final round in second place but dropped into fouth after carding a 305.
The individual title was won by South Florida's Christina Jones, who fired a one-over 73 to move from third into the winning spot with a 218 tally. Camille Blackerby of TCU placed second at 219, while Amanda Mathis of Mississippi State and Sara Brown of Michigan State tied for third at 220. A pair of Furman golfers, freshmen Blair Lamb and Kathleen Ekey, tied with Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse for fifth, with a three-round 221 total.
Ekey was Furman's low round of the day with a one-under 71 at the 6,103-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course. Lamb's 76 was the second lowest of the day for the Lady Paladins, while Haley Gildea fired a 78 and finished tied for 10th at 225 and Connor Atkinson carded a 79 to tie for 18th at 227. Theresa Paik was the team's non-counter with an 80 and finished the tournament tied for 63rd at 237. Paige Bromen, a Furman sophomore playing as an individual, shot 74 on Sunday and tied for 32nd with a 232 tournament total.
The Lady Paladin golf team returns to action Oct. 28-30 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
