Lady Paladin Golfers To Remain In East

April 25, 2005

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -

The 19th ranked Furman women's golf team will compete in the NCAA East Regional, May 5-7, at the University of Florida Golf Course, it was announced today by the NCAA Division I Golf Committee.

The Lady Paladins are one of 21 teams that will vie for a top eight finish, which qualifies for a berth in the NCAA Championships, May 17-20, at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Joining Furman in the East Regional are top-ranked Duke, No. 6 Pepperdine, eighth-ranked Washington, 10th-ranked Ohio State, No. 11 Florida, and No. 13 Tulane, in addition to 14 other teams ranked below the Lady Paladins.

"We are excited to be staying in the East and we are excited to be going to the University of Florida to play on a course we are familiar with," said coach Mic Potter after Monday's NCAA announcement. "We played the University of Florida course in March, so we know what to expect and what to work on. It is a great test of golf in that it is long for a par 70 course, and will benefit those teams who balance length off the tee with a strong short game."

Furman recorded an 11th-place finish in the Lady Gator, which was the Lady Paladins' first competition of the spring season. Sophomore Jenny Suh was Furman's top finisher, taking 15th with rounds of 73-79-77. Duke took third in that tournament, with Ohio State finishing fourth, Florida sixth, and South Carolina, who will also compete in the East Regional, tying for ninth.

By competing in the 2005 NCAA Regionals, Furman continues its streak of never having missed the Division I women's golf postseason since the regional format began in 1993 (13 straight years). If the Lady Paladins advance to the National Championships, it will be the program's 15th appearance in the finals since 1983.
