Furman Stretches SoCon Golf Lead to 24

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -

Elon carded a 313 and the College of Charleston shot 315 to move into second and third, respectively, at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championships Saturday in Greenville, S.C., but Furman remained atop the leaderboard with a 24 stroke advantage following a day two 299.

Lady Paladin sophomore Jenny Suh followed up a first-round 68 with a 77, but remained in the individual lead at 145, five strokes ahead of Western Carolina's Ashley Hovda and Furman teammates Theresa Paik and Sarah Sturm. Hovda carded the low round of the day on Saturday with a one-under 71 despite blustery conditions, while Paik fired a 72 and Sturm shot a second consecutive 75.

Hovda's one-under performance was the result of four birdies and three bogeys. She got off to a good start with a birdie on No. 1, and went to three under with birdies on Nos. 6 and 7. Hovda gave one back on No. 8, but made the turn at two-under. On the backside she bogeyed the par four 13^th hole, but birdied 17 before finishing with a bogey on 18 to drop from two-under to one under.

ETSU's Ashley Barton, who was in second place entering the second round, fired a 78 to fall into fifth, six strokes off Suh's leading pace, while Furman's Connor Atkinson and Elon's Krista Bulow are tied for sixth at 152.

Furman enters the third and final round of competition with a two-day 597 total. Elon is in second at 621, with College of Charleston at 627. The Bucs of ETSU are two back of the Cougars at 629, while Western Carolina rounds out the top five with a 635.

Round three of the Southern Conference Championships is slated for Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m., at the Furman University Golf Course. The top three teamsgo off in the final wave, beginning at 10:20 a.m.
