Furman Takes Nine Stroke Lead In SoCon Golf Championships

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -
In a day that started with sunshine but fell to battering winds and rain in mid afternoon, the Furman women's golf team survived an almost three-hour rain delay to post a first-round 298 and take a nine stroke lead over East Tennessee State entering the second round of the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championships.
Furman was paced by sophomore Jenny Suh, who carded a four-under par 68 and took a five stroke lead ahead of
The Bucs of East Tennessee State carded an opening 307 on the strength of Barton's 73 and a 77 by Natalia Giraldo, while Elon moved into third at 308 with Morgan Olds and Krista Bulow tied for fourth at 76, and Samanth Widner in a six-way tie for sixth after an opening 77.
Suh, who is the reigning Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and was an honorable mention All-America choice as a freshman, made the turn at one under, after a birdie on the par four fifth hole. She then birdied 10, 14, and 15, to record a career-low 68 and take her place atop the league leaderboard with 36 holes left to play.
Barton, who ranks second in the Southern Conference stroke average statistics behind Suh, had three birdies on the day, but also picked up four bogeys en route to a one-over 73. In all, the 44 SoCon golfers tallied 53 birdies in the opening round at the 5,984-yard, par 72 Furman Golf Course.
Round two of the three-round competition begins on Saturday at
Southern Conference Champion.
