Charleston, S.C. -- Furman junior Stefanie Kenoyer carded a final round 73 to finish with a share of third place at four-under par and help the Paladins to a fifth place showing at the season-opening Duramed Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C., on Monday.
Kenoyer (69-70-73=212) struggled through the first 15 holes, but posted birdies at No. 15, 16 and 18 to finish at one-over for the day. Junior Jackie Hilea (71-70-74=215) also recorded a pair of late birdies to rally for a 74 and a 10th place finish at one-under for the 54-hole event.
Georgia (280-283-287=850), who led by 12 strokes entering Monday's final round, compiled a one-under 287 to cruise to a seven-stroke victory over second place Florida State (292-283-282=857). North Carolina (288-290-291=867) finished third with Tennessee (294-289-289=872) fourth and Furman in fifth. Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Texas, Maryland and College of Charleston rounded out the top 10 in an 18-team Cougar Classic field that included nine 2009 NCAA Tournament teams and four teams that finished last season ranked in the top 25.
Marta Silva Zamora (67-71-70=208) of Georgia fired a final round 70 to overtake Lacey Agnew (71-65-73=209) of Florida State and claim individual medalist honors. Agnew finished in second just three strokes ahead of Kenoyer and Emilie Burger of Georgia.
Paladin freshman Laura Wearn (72-75-73=220) joined Kenoyer and Hilea with a top 25 finish after carding a one-over 73 on Monday in her first collegiate tournament.
