Hilton Head Island, S.C. -- Furman junior Stefanie Kenoyer was tabbed Southern Conference Women’s Golf Player of the Year following the final round of the SoCon Championship on Tuesday at Moss Creek Golf Club. The Paladins carded a final round 310 to finish in fifth place.
Kenoyer (77-76-74=227), who was joined on the All-SoCon team by fellow junior Jackie Hilea, shot two-over 74 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth place after claiming SoCon Individual Medalist honors in 2008 and 2009. The Lighthouse Point, Fla., native led the league in stroke average this season and currently ranks 15th nationally in the GolfStat Rankings.
Freshman Alexa Rancourt (77-74-76=227) joined Kenoyer in a tie for sixth place while HIlea (78-72-80=230) slipped to 12th after an eight-over 80 in final round play.
Chattanooga (306-297-299=902) rallied during the final round with an 11-over 299 to edge second place College of Charleston (300-301-309=910) to claim the SoCon title. UNC Greensboro, Samford and the Paladins rounded out the top five.
Appalachian State’s Yue Xu (69-72-76=217) held on to finish at one-over par and claim a three-shot victory over Chattanooga’s Emma de Groot (76-72-72=220) in the race for individual medalist honors. Xu, a freshman, shot a final round 76.
Furman, No. 50 in the latest GolfStat rankings, will have to wait to find out if it will receive an at-large bid to an NCAA Regional. The Paladins have made 18 consecutive trips to NCAA postseason play.
