Furman Third Entering Final Round At SoCon Women's Golf Championships

April 16, 2007

Mt. Pleasant, S.C. - The Furman women's golf team battled windy conditions to card an opening round 314 and grab third place at the midway point of the 36-hole Southern Conference Women's Golf Championships at Patriots Point Golf Links on Monday.

Sophomore Blair Lamb and freshman Corrine Carr paced the Lady Paladins in the first round with identical rounds of five-over par 77 to tie for fourth.  Sophomore Kathleen Ekey, tied for ninth place, posted a 79 while Monique Gesualdi carded a first round 81.

The College of Charleston took the team lead after 18 holes on the strength of a 307.  The Cougars hold a five stroke lead over Western Carolina and seven stroke advantage on the Lady Paladins.  Megan Miller of Charleston opened the tournament with a 74 to hold the individual lead while teammate Steffi Kirchmayr and Western Carolina's Desiree Karlsson finished two strokes back at four over par.

The final round of the championship will tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The championship was shortened to a two-round tournament after poor weather conditions canceled the first round on Sunday.

Complete first round results and second round tee times will be available at www.soconsports.com.
