New Orleans, La. -- Freshman Alexa Rancourt fired a final round 69 and junior Stefanie Kenoyer carded a 70 to help Furman to a 16th place finish at the Tiger/Wave Golf Classic at the par-72 English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La., on Sunday.
After struggling in second round action on Saturday, Rancourt (75-94-69=238) birdied six holes on Sunday to notch her best round as a Paladin and help Furman climb from 20th place to a share of 16th against a field that included 16 of the top 50 teams in the nation.
Kenoyer (77-77-70=224), ranked 21st in the country, posted three birdies and just one bogey to card a two-under 70 and move into a tie for 15th place. Jackie Hilea added a four-over 76 and Laura Wearn finished at six-over 78 to guide the Paladins to a five-over 293 in final round play.
Auburn (305-296-288=889) claimed the team title finishing seven strokes ahead of second place TCU and eight strokes better than third place Alabama. LSU, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Mississippi rounded out the top 10 in the 23-team field.
LSU’s Megan McChrystal (72-72-69=213) shot three-under 69 on Sunday to edge Virginia’s Calle Nielson (73-72-69=214) for individual medalist honors.
The Furman women’s golf team is back in action March 26-28, at the Liz Murphey Collegiate in Athens, Ga.
