PHOENIX, ARIZ. -- Jacqueline Bendrick (-1) fired an opening-round 71 to tie for seventh, pacing the 20th-ranked Furman women's golf team (+5) Friday at the PING/ASU Invitational at the par 72, 6,430 yard Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
A senior from Mercer Island, Wash., Bendrick notched a team-high four birdies, all on the front nine, to turn at 3-under par. She finished the day at 1-under, four strokes behind top-ranked Andrea Lee (-5) of Stanford, who led the field with a 67 on Friday.
Junior Natalie Srinivasan (E) shot an even 72 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 16 to tie for 15th, while senior Haylee Harford (+2) is tied for 30th after carding an opening-round 74 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 5. Sophomore Madison Moosa (+4) and freshman Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+4) are tied for 51st after each posted a 76 on Friday. Rhéaume tallied birdies on No. 5 and No. 9.
Junior Marra Burton (+13), who is playing as an individual, recorded an 85 in the first round to tie for 82nd.
Just six strokes separate the top seven teams after Friday's round. Fourth-ranked Stanford (-1) leads No. 16 Arizona State (E) by one stroke, while 21st-ranked Oklahoma (+1) sits in third after one round of play. No. 23 Oregon (+2) is in four place, while Furman (+5), top-ranked Southern Cal (+5) and No. 31 Washington (+5) are tied for fifth.
The 54-hole tournament continues on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. MST. Furman will tee off on No. 1 beginning at 8:45 and will play in a group with Oregon and Southern Cal. The tournament will conclude on Sunday starting at 7:30 a.m. MST. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via http://www.golfstat.com.
