CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Senior Haylee Harford (-5) is tied for second after firing a 67 to lead the 11th-ranked Furman women's golf team Friday in the opening day of the 43rd Annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the par 72, 6,379 yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
A native of Leavittsburg, Ohio, Harford, who ranks fourth nationally, started the round with a birdie on No. 6 and played flawless golf with five birdies, including consecutive birdies No. 16 and No. 17 and a final birdie to close the round on No. 5. She finished the round just one stroke back of leader Jaravee Boonchant of Duke, who carded an opening-round 66.
Junior Natalie Srinivasan (+1) is tied for 26th after recording a 73 in Friday's first round, and senior Jacqueline Bendrick (+2) notched a 74 with a birdie on her final hole, No. 6, to tie for 32nd. Freshman Kyra Cox (+3) is tied for 42nd after shooting a 75 with three birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18, and sophomore Caitlin Cotterill (+7) started the tournament with a 79, tying for 85th.
Duke (-17) led the field with a 271 on Friday to finish the day six strokes ahead of second-place Virginia (-11). Arkansas (-3) is in third, followed by Louisville (E) in fourth. The Paladins (+1) are tied for fifth with Wake Forest (+1), one stroke ahead of South Carolina (+2) and Vanderbilt (+2), who are tied for seventh.
The 54-hole tournament continues at 8:51 a.m. Saturday with teams starting on No. 1 and No. 10. Furman will tee off of No. 10 starting at 9:54 a.m. and will play in a group with Louisville and Wake Forest. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome.
