Furman Wins Moon Golf Invitational By 17 Strokes

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The ninth-ranked Furman women's golf team won the Moon Golf Invitational by 17 strokes Tuesday at the par 72, 6,309 yard Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla.

All four of the Paladins' couting scores finished among the top 10, including senior Alice Chen (-5), who won individual medalist honors after posting rounds of 70-71-70=211.  In Tuesday's round, Chen carded a team-high five birdies, including two in her last four holes, to finish three strokes ahead of Furman sophomore Natalie Srinivasan (-2), who tied for second after scoring a 72 with two birdies in Tuesday's final round.

Senior Jacqueline Bendrick (+3) and junior Haylee Harford (+3) tied for 10th.  Bendrick birdied No. 1 and No. 2 for a 74 in Tuesday's round, while Harford carded a 72 with four birdies in the last round.  Senior Reona Hirai (+7) scored a 74 with three birdies on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 22nd.

Three Paladins competed as individuals at the tournament.  Sophomore Marra Burton(+11)  led all individuals, finishing in a tie for 35th place after tallying an 80 on Tuesday.  Freshman Madison Moosa (+18) scored a 79 with birdies on No. 3 and No. 14 to tie for 54th, and rookie Caitlin Cotterill (+19) tied for 57th after shooting a 79 with a birdie on No. 9 in the final round.

"I'm really happy to get a win in our first event of the spring," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull.  "The team played really well under some very tough conditions and really fought hard until the end.  It was nice to have four players in the top ten.  I was particularly proud of Alice for her second collegiate win, especially the way she played coming in.  Natalie also had a good tournament, finishing second."

The Paladins were the only team to finish the tournament under par.  Old Dominion (+16) finished second, followed by Virginia Tech (+17) and Chattanooga (+17), who tied for third.

Furman will compete at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., March 2-4.
