Harford Ties For Seventh To Lead No. 10 Furman At NCAA Lubbock Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Sophomore Haylee Harford (E) carded an even 72 to tie for seventh place among individuals and help the tenth-ranked Furman (+12) women's golf team to a tie for eighth place Monday in the opening round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional at the par-72, 6,593 yard The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas. 

Harford, who ranks 37th nationally, notched a team-high four birdies, including three on the front nine, to finish the day four strokes back of leader Lilia Vu (-4) of UCLA, who is ranked fourth nationally.  Freshman Natalie Srinivasan (+2) shot a 74 with three birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 15 and No. 16, to tie for 16th, and junior Alice Chen (+3) recorded a birdie on No. 12 to tie for 26th with an opening-round 75.  Senior Taylor Totland (+7) scored a birdie on No. 1 and tied for 69th with a 79, while freshman Carly Burkhardt (+8) birdied No. 1 and No. 3 to tie for 76th with an 80.

Seventh-ranked Arizona State (+5) holds a one-stroke lead over No. 47 Oregon (+6) entering Tuesday's second round.  Host Texas Tech (+8), which is ranked 34th, and No. 2 UCLA (+8) are tied for third, followed by No. 28 Brigham Young (+9) in fifth place.

The Paladins, who will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, are part of an 18-team regional field that is battling for a top six finish and a berth in the 24-team NCAA Championship which will be held May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Lubbock Regional field includes six of the top 25 teams in the country, led by second-ranked UCLA, No. 7 Arizona State, tenth-ranked Furman, No. 15 Kent State, 18th-ranked Texas, and 23rd-ranked Oklahoma.

Furman, which secured the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing its 16th SoCon Championship last month at the Country Club of Lexington in Lexington, S.C., is making its third-consecutive and 20th overall NCAA Regional appearance.  The Paladins appeared in 17-straight regionals from 1993, when the regional format began, until 2010.  Furman finished fourth last season at the NCAA Bryan Regional in Bryan, Texas, and went on to place 20th at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
