LEXINGTON, S.C. – Defending Southern Conference champion Furman (-8) holds the team lead after Sunday's first round of play at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship par-72, 6,153 yard Country Club of Lexington in Lexington, S.C.

Seeking their third-straight title and 16th overall, the 10th-ranked Paladins shot an 8-under 280 on Sunday, the best round in the history of the SoCon tournament and the second-best in Furman program history, to take a 20-stroke lead over Chattanooga (+12).

Furman has four players in the top five including junior Alice Chen (-3) and freshman Natalie Srinivasan (-3), who are tied with ETSU's Loy Hee Ying for the individual lead after each fired a 69 on Sunday.  Chen, who has held at least a share of the SoCon individual lead in each of the tournament's last four rounds, paced the Paladins with six birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 and again on No. 13 and No. 14, in the opening round, while Srinivasan added four birdies, with three in the last six holes.

Freshman Carly Burkhardt (-2) is in fourth place after carding a 70 with birdies on No. 13 and No. 18 on Sunday, while senior Taylor Totland (E) stands in fifth place after shooting an even 72 with birdies on No. 3 and No. 6 in the first round.  Sophomore Haylee Harford (+4) shot a 76 to tie for 14th.

Due to inclement weather in the Lexington area, Monday's round has been cancelled.  The final round of the 36-hole tournament will begin Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.  The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 at 10:20 a.m. and play in a group with ETSU and Chattanooga.  Follow the team's Twitter account @FurmanWPaladins for updates on schedule changes.  The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
