Paladins Finish Third At 3M Augusta Invitational

AUGUSTA, GA. -- Sophomore Alice Chen (+2) and junior Taylor Totland (+2) tied for tenth to help the 33rd-ranked Furman women's golf team to a third-place finish in the final day of the 3M Augusta Invitational at the par 72, 6,246 yard Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.  Due to predicted rain in the Augusta area, the teams played 36 holes on Saturday to complete the tournament. 

Chen birdied No. 9 for a 73 in the morning round then added a 76 with three birdies in the afternoon, and Totland carded five birdies for a 71 in the morning then birdied No. 9 and No. 18 for an afternoon 76.  The Paladin duo finished the tournament seven strokes back of Frida Gustafsson Spang (-5) of East Carolina, who earned individual medalist honors after winning the tournament with a 73-71-67=211.

Rookie Haylee Harford (+5) tied for 17th after leading the team with five birdies for a 68 in the afternoon round, and senior Valentina Romero (+7), who notched five birdies in the morning round then carded a 73 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 9 in the afternoon, tied for 24th.  

Sophomore Jacqueline Bendrick (+8), who played as an individual, shot an even 72 in the final round with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 11 and No. 12, to tie for 29th, and sophomore Reona Hirai (+12), who carded a 73 in the morning round, tied for 40th after scoring two birdies in each of Saturday's rounds.

Host Augusta (-3), ranked 42nd nationally, won the tournament for the first time in its nine-year history.  The Jaguars beat Coastal Carolina (+7) by ten strokes, while the Paladins (+11) finished third.  SoCon foe East Tennessee State (+14) was fourth, followed by 35th-ranked East Carolina (+23).  Seventeenth-ranked Florida State (+25) placed sixth, and No. 21 Texas A&M (+32) concluded the tournament in seventh place.

"The girls hung in there today, but we just didn't quite have our best stuff," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester.  "Hats off to Augusta and Coastal, as they really fired some impressive rounds." 

Furman will compete at the Clemson Invitational at Lake Keowee April 1-3.
