TALLAHASSEE, FLA. -- Sophomore Taylor Totland (-1) is in second place after firing a two-under 70 to help the 26th-ranked Furman women's golf team move into fourth place Saturday at the third annual Florida State Match-Up Tournament at the par 72, 6,236 yard Southwood Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Paladins (+19) tied with 17th-ranked Virginia (+18) for the best round of the day, carding a 294 to move up five spots in the team standings. Second-ranked South Carolina (+15) leads #38 Florida State (+18) and Virginia by three strokes heading into the tournament's final round.
Totland, a native of Tinton Falls, N.J, birdied two holes on the front to make the turn at two under then birdied two out of three holes from No. 10 through 12 to finish the day two strokes behind Bianca Fabrizio of Texas A&M, who carded a 72 for a two-day total of 141.
Freshman Alice Chen (+4) birdied No. 3 to shoot one under on the front nine then birdied No. 16 to card a 75 in the second round, tying for 14th place. Junior Valentina Romero (+8) enters Sunday's final round tied for 27th after birdieing three holes on Saturday, and freshman Jacqueline Bendrick (+10) is tied for 33rd after shooting a 76 in the second round. Rookie Reona Hirai (+11) birdied No. 3 and No. 5 on Saturday, finishing in a tie for 44th after carding a 78.
"The girls got off to a great start today," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester. "After the turn, the wind picked up, and the back nine played much tougher. Hopefully we have positioned ourselves to continue to move up the board and work toward a solid finish tomorrow."
The Paladins tee off of No. 1 at 9:10 a.m. Sunday in the final round of the 54-hole tournament, which features four teams ranked in the top 25 and seven teams among the top 50 in the latest Golfstat rankings.
