KNOXVILLE, TENN. -- Furman sophomore Taylor Totland (+4) is in tenth place after carding a 76 Saturday in the second round of play at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at the par 71, 5,870 yards Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
Totland, who is ranked 14th nationally, birdied three holes on the day to finish the round at four-over, five strokes behind third-ranked Nanna Madsen (-1) of South Carolina, who is one-under after firing a 69 on Saturday.
Paladin freshman Alice Chen (+9) is tied for 35th after birdieing No. 14 to score a 78 on Saturday, while senior Laura DeMarco (+10) led Furman with a 74 in second-round play. DeMarco, who is tied for 41st entering Sunday's round, birdied No. 7 to finish the front one-over then notched a second birdie on No. 13. Freshman Reona Hirai (+11) and Junior Valentina Romero (+18) each carded a 75 on Saturday. Hirai birdied two holes on the front to finish the round tied for 50th, while Romero recorded one birdie on the front and one on the back to enter Sunday's final round tied for 77th.
No. 40 Louisville (+12) carded a 287 on Saturday to move into first place, three strokes ahead of No. 33 Kent State (+15). Second-ranked South Carolina (+16) is in third place entering Sunday's final round. The 11th-ranked Paladins (+31) are in ninth place following two rounds of play.
"We didn't play our best today, but we managed to hang in there and piece together a decent round," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester, who is in her third year at the helm of the Paladin program. "Hopefully we can move up a few spots tomorrow with a strong third round score."
Furman will tee off of No. 1 Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the tournament's final round. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
