HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Taylor Totland (+6) recorded her first career hole in one to lead the Furman women's golf team to a one-stroke advantage in the second day of the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship on Moss Creek Golf Club's par-72, 5,941-yard North Course in Hilton Head, S.C.
The Paladins (+30), who are seeking a record 14th SoCon Championships overall and the team's first title since 2009, carded a 13-over 305 Monday to enter the tournament's final round with a one-stroke advantage over Chattanooga (+31), who fired a tournament best 295.
Totland birdied the opening hole before scoring the hole in one on No. 5 to go two under after five holes. Following a birdie on No. 9, she remained two-under at the turn and carded a 74 for the day to enter Tuesday's final round in third place with a 150.
Furman senior Aubrie Street (+9) and sophomore Valentina Romero (+9) are tied for sixth place at 153 following two rounds of play, while junior Laura DeMarco (+10) led the Paladins with a 73 on Monday after birdieing No. 11. She enters Tuesday's final round in eighth place, while sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+11) birdied No. 4 and No. 8 to finish the day tied for 12th place with a two-day total of 155.
"Overall, I was pleased with how we played today," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester following Monday's play. "We struggled on the back nine, as the wind picked up a good bit and the course played tougher. There were a lot of really good things today, including Taylor's hole in one. Tomorrow should be lots of fun as we head into the final round with a one-shot lead! This is what we have worked hard for all year, and I'm very proud of the girls."
Chattanooga's Emily McLennan continues to lead the individuals after shooting a 75 on Monday. Her two-round total of 148 is one stroke ahead of teammate Jordan Britt and just two strokes in front of Furman's Totland. The 2013 SoCon Freshman of the year is vying to become Chattanooga's fourth straight medalist in the annual event.
Tuesday's final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, due to predicted inclement weather in the Hilton Head area.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
