HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Thirteen-time Southern Conference champion Furman (+17) holds the team lead after Sunday's first round of play at the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship on Moss Creek Golf Club's par-72, 5,941-yard North Course in Hilton Head, S.C.

Seeking their first title since 2009, when the tournament moved to Moss Creek, the Paladins shot a 17-over 305 Sunday to hold a seven-stroke lead over Samford (+24) and Chattanooga (+24), who both sit at 312. Each of Furman's counting four is in the top 10 individually, paced by Valentina Romero's 3-over 75, which has her alone in third place.

Furman's Aubrie Street (+4) and Taylor Totland (+4) are among a three-way tie for fourth with matching 76s, while Stephanie Carlozzi (+6) rounds out the Paladins' scoring contingent in 10th with a 78.

"We had a solid game plan today on how we wanted to play the course, and I was very proud of the girls for sticking to the plan," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester following the round.  We didn't always execute the way I know we can and definitely left some shots out there.  I feel confident that we can improve tomorrow."

Chattanooga's Emily McLennan finished with a 1-over 73 to hold the first-round lead for the second straight year. The 2013 SoCon Freshman of the year is vying to become Chattanooga's fourth straight medalist in the annual event.

Second round action is slated for Monday at 8 a.m. with the Paladins scheduled to tee off of No. 1 beginning at 9:40 a.m.  Final round action will take place on Tuesday morning.

The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
