LAS VEGAS, NEV. -- Senior Aubrie Street (+2) and sophomore Valentina Romero (+2) each fired a 74 to pace Furman Sunday in the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the par-72, 6,320 yard Stallion Mountain Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
Street, who teed off of No. 10, birdied her final hole, and Romero notched birdies on 6 and 13, both par-5s, to finish the round in a tie for 31st place, four strokes behind leader Elin Arvidsson of Texas Tech, who shot a 70 to open the tournament.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+3) registered birdies on three of her first nine holes to card a 74 in the opening round, tying for 43rd place, while sophomore Stephanie Carlozzi (+5) birdied the par-4 No. 7 to tie for 67th with a 75 in Sunday's round. Junior Daffodil Sanchez (+20) enters the second round in 95th place after shooting a 92 in the opening round.
"We didn't play our best today, but it was still a solid team effort," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester. "Today's conditions were ideal. The wind is supposed to howl tomorrow, so we will need to adjust."
UNLV (E) holds a two-stroke lead over second-place Minnesota (+2) and San Diego State (+2). UCF (+3) is fourth, followed by Texas Tech (+4) in fifth place. The Paladins (+12) are tied with Fresno State and Denver for 13th place following the first day of competition.
Second-round play in the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Furman will tee off of No. 10 at 8:48 a.m. Pacific Time. Live tournament scoring will be available via www.golfstat.com.
