AUSTIN, TEXAS -- Senior Aubrie Street (+6) shot a par 72 to tie for 39th place, leading Furman Tuesday in the final round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the par-72, 6,143 yard University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
Street teed off of 16, registering a birdie on the par-3, then birdied the par-4 18 to head to the front at two under. She birdied 9 and 14, both par-5s, to finish the tournament 18 strokes behind individual medalist Allison Lee (-12) of UCLA, who carded a 67 in the final round.
Paladin freshman Taylor Totland (+9) tied for 53rd place after carding an 81 with two birdies in Tuesday's round, while junior Laura DeMarco (+17) shot a 79 in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 75. Senior Ingunn Gunnarsdottir (+19) also recorded a 79 on Tuesday, placing in a tie for 82nd, and sophomore Valentina Romero (+20) finished 85th after notching a final-round 77.
"Overall, I felt like we had a below-standard event," said Furman head coach Kelley Hester. "The girls have been working hard but were just not able to execute consistently. We had some solid individual rounds, as Taylor played well on days one and two, and Aubrie had a solid tournament, too. We will go home and regroup for Las Vegas and do our best to finish the semester on a high note."
UCLA (-22) fired a third-round 275 to win the tournament by six strokes over Arizona State (-16). Miami (-5) placed third, followed by Iowa State (-2) and SMU (+8). Furman (+47) ended the tournament in 17th-place.
The Paladins will conclude the fall season Oct. 27-29 at the UNLV Fall Showdown in Las Vegas, Nevada. Furman will open the 2014 spring season at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C., March 7-9.
