Greenville, S.C. – Freshman Valentina Romero fired a one-over 73 to lead Furman into second place after 18 holes on Sunday in the 2013 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at Moss Creek Golf Club's par-72 North Course in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Romero (+1), a native of Cali, Colombia, recorded three birdies on the day and notched seven pars over her final eight holes to post an even-par back nine. She is one stroke behind first round leaders Emily McLennan (E) of Chattanooga and Sunna Vidisdottir (E) of Elon through 18 holes.
Senior Laura Wearn, who also notched three birdies on the day, overcame a triple bogey on the front nine to shoot a three-over 75 and grab a share of fifth place while fellow senior Alexa Rancourt carded a four-over 76 to hold 11th place.
McLennan led Chattanooga (+9) to a nine-over 297 in opening round play and a five-stroke lead on the Paladins (+14). College of Charleston (+17) holds third place with Samford (+24) and Appalachian State (+25) rounding out the top five in the 10-team field.
Second round action is slated for Monday at 8 a.m. with the Paladins scheduled to tee off beginning at 10:30 a.m. Final round action will take place on Tuesday morning.
The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
