Tallahassee, Fla. – Senior Laura Wearn fired an opening round 69 to grab second place and propel the Furman women's golf team into a share of third place at seven-over 295 in opening round play at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament on Friday at the par-72 Southwood Golf Course.
Wearn, a Charlotte, N.C., native, bogeyed each of her first three holes before playing the remaining 15 holes at six-under par to take control of second place, just three strokes behind tournament leader Rocio Sanchez Lobato (-6) of the University of Georgia. Furman's Aubrie Street tallied three birdies on her back nine to card an even-par 72 while freshman Valentina Romero notched a first round 76.
The University of Georgia took the opening round lead with a two-over 290 to hold a one-stroke advantage on second place Tennessee. Furman (+7) is tied with host Florida State for third place just five strokes off of the lead in the 12-team field.
Second round action at the opening event of the spring is set for Saturday morning with the final round scheduled for Sunday.
