Hanahan, S.C. – Senior Laura Wearn fired a three-under 69 on Monday to move into a tie for fifth place through two rounds at the season-opening Cougar Classic at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
The Paladins (307-300=607), who suffered a set back on Sunday evening when freshman Valentina Romero's first round score was disallowed after the Colombia native accidentally signed for an incorrect score, bounced back with a 12-over 300 on Tuesday to hold 23rd place.
"We improved today and will do our best to continue to improve tomorrow," said first-year Paladin head coach Kelley Hester. "Laura had a solid round and made some birdies to put herself in position to have a strong finish."
Wearn (-4), a Charlotte, N.C., native, recorded five second round birdies and played Yeamans Hall's 10 par-four holes at four-under par to climb into a share of fifth place with 18 holes to play in the 54-hole tournament. She birdied three of the first six holes on the back nine to shoot two-under over the final nine holes.
Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi (+11) recovered from back-to-back double bogeys at No. 13 and 14 to post her first career eagle at No. 15 en route to a four-over 76. Romero played the back nine at one-over to shoot a second round 77.
The University of Florida (-11) shot a tournament-best 279 to open up a three-stroke advantage over second place Southern Cal (-8) through 36 holes. Vanderbilt (-2), Virginia (E) and Auburn (E) rounded out the top five in the 24-team field.
Camilla Hedberg (-9) of Florida followed a first round 69 with a 66 on Monday to lead teammate Isabelle Lendl (-7) by two strokes.
Final round action is set for Tuesday morning.
