Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Furman junior Alexa Rancourt notched a two-over par 74 to forge a four-way tie atop the leaderboard after the opening round of the 2012 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship on Sunday at the par-72 Moss Creek Club North Course. The Paladins hold third place at 23-over 311 after 18 holes.
Rancourt (+2), a native of Portland, Maine, birdied three holes, including two on the front nine, and overcame bogeys on three of her final four holes to earn a share of the lead along with Martyna Mierzwa of Elon, Bergona Sarabia of UNCG and Leigh Whitaker of College of Charleston.
The UNCG Spartans (+18) shot a first round 306 to open a four-stroke advantage over second place Elon (+22) and five-stroke cushion over third place Furman (+23). The Paladins held a nine-stroke lead shortly after the turn, but Furman's four scorers played the back nine at a combined 22-over par to slip to third.
Second round action in the SoCon Championship is slated for 8 a.m. on Monday with final round play scheduled for Tuesday morning.
