Mesa, Ariz. – Junior Laura Wearn led Furman with a five-over 77 on Saturday as the Paladins faded to ninth place after two rounds in the Clover Cup at the par-72, 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club.
Wearn, who carded a first round 71 on Friday, was in position to hold a top 10 spot before posting a triple bogey on the final hole of her second round. The Charlotte, N.C. native tallied three birdies on the day and holds 15th place through 36 holes at four-over par.
Krista Merkle of Tulsa and Emily Talley of Colorado are tied for the lead at six-under par following rounds of 70 and 72, respectively, on Saturday. Nine golfers are under par entering Sunday's final round.
The University of Colorado (-18) shot a 281 to extend its lead to 23 strokes over second place Oklahoma (+5) and 26 strokes over third place Notre Dame. Furman (+36), fourth place after the first round, shot a 320 on Saturday to slide into ninth place in the 12-team field.
