Mesa, Ariz. – Furman freshman Daffodil Sanchez (-3), playing in her hometown of Mesa, Ariz., posted an opening-round 69 to lead Furman (+4) into a share of fourth place on Friday in the Clover Cup at the par-72, 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club.
Sanchez, in fifth place after 18 holes, birdied five holes, including three on the back nine, to pace the Paladins to a four-over 292. Junior Laura Wearn (-1) notched four birdies to move into a share of 10th place with a 71 while Alexa Rancourt fired a first round 74.
Colorado (-11) used a round of 277 to fashion an 11-stroke lead over second place Notre Dame (E). Oklahoma (+1) holds third place while Florida International is tied for fourth with Furman in a 12-team field that includes five of the top 40 teams in the nation.
Emily Talley of Colorado shot a first round 66 to grab a one-stroke lead over Ashley Armstrong (-5) of Notre Dame in the individual standings. Kristina Merkle (-4) of Colorado, Alex Stewart (-4) of Tulsa and Sanchez rounded out the top five.
Second round play in the 54-tournament is slated for Saturday morning. The Paladins are scheduled to begin their round from the No. 1 tee at 8 a.m. MT. Final round action will take place on Sunday morning.
