Stanford, Calif. – Junior Laura Wearn posted a final round 75 to help the Furman women's golf team climb to a seventh place finish in the Peg Barnard Invitational at the par-71 Stanford Golf Course on Sunday.
Wearn (+13), who began her round at hole No. 8, got off to a rough start with a double bogey at No. 9 and bogeys on each of the next two holes, but the Charlotte, N.C., native played the final 14 holes at even par to claim a 28th place finish. Senior Liz Wendt (+11) carded an eight-over 79 on Sunday to pace the Paladins with a 20th place finish.
No. 23 California (+19) cruised to a 19-stroke victory over second place Stanford (+38) while Fresno State (+39) finished in third place. Furman (+62) rallied from an opening round 317 to shoot 313 on Sunday and climb out of a three-way tie for eighth place in its first tournament of the spring.
Emily Childs (+3) of California and first round leader Christine Uhalde (+3) of Fresno State tied for individual medalist honors.
Furman returns to action March 16-18, at the Notre Dame Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz.
