Greenville, N.C. -- Furman's Laura Wearn (-4) fired rounds of 71 and 69 to grab a share of third place after 36 holes on Monday in the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, hosted by East Carolina University, at the par-72 Greenville Country Club.
Wearn opened tournament play in the morning with a one-under 71. The Charlotte, N.C., native birdied seven holes during the first round and stood at four-under after eight holes before suffering a nine on the par-five No. 9. The junior bounced back with three birdies on the back nine to shoot under par.
In the afternoon round, Wearn picked up where she left off recording a birdie at No. 4 and an eagle on No. 9 to avenge her first round troubles and card a two-under at the turn. She tallied two more birdies on the back nine to finish at three-under 69.
"Laura said she was determined to get revenge on that hole," said Furman head coach Jen Hanna of Wearn's first round struggle at No. 9. "It's amazing what one can do when they set their mind to something."
Wearn trails Fanny Cnops (-5) of UNC Greensboro and Laverry Kumar (-5) of UNC Wilmington by one stroke entering the final round.
Furman senior Liz Wendt (+4) moved into a tie for 20th at eight-over after posting rounds of 75 and 73 on Monday while Paladin freshmen Laura DeMarco (+9) and Daffodil (+9) Sanchez are tied for a share of 46th place.
East Carolina (+7) used a second round 291 to open up a two-stroke lead over second place UNCG (+9) and five-stroke advantage over third place Maryland (+12). UNCW and Georgia State rounded out the top five in front of sixth place Furman (+18).
Final round action for the 20-team field is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
