Greensboro, N.C. -- Junior Alexa Rancourt used an opening round 71 to grab a one-stroke lead and help the Furman women's golf team into fourth place after 18 holes in the UNC Greensboro Starmount Fall Classic at the par-71 Starmount Country Club on Sunday.
Rancourt, a native of Portland, Maine, got off to a rough start with bogeys on each of her first two holes, but she notched a birdie at the par-4, No. 4 to finish the front nine at one-over. On the back nine, Rancourt recorded two more birdies and shot a one-under par 35 to finish at even-par 71.
Furman (+22) trails first place Maryland by three strokes and is just two strokes behind UNCG and East Tennessee State after 18 holes. Georgia State, James Madison, Campbell, Winthrop, Western Carolina and Elon round out the top 10 in the 14-team field.
Rancourt holds a one-stroke lead over Kayla Cline of Winthrop, Fanny Chops of UNCG and Mayta Vizcarrondo of ETSU through 18 holes. A total of 13 golfers are within five strokes of the lead entering round two.
Second round action is set for Monday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Paladins will tee-off from No. 1 beginning at 9:15 a.m.
