Athens, Ga. – Seniors Stefanie Kenoyer and Jackie Hilea each recorded an opening round 76 as the Furman women's golf team shot 304 on Friday in the 39th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course.
Playing a best-ball format which counts each team's low score holes from each hole instead of the team's low four scores of the day, Furman shot 16-over par to hold 19th place in a 23-team field that includes 19 of the top-40 teams in the nation.
Kenoyer, a native of Lighthouse Point, Fla., tallied birdies on two of her first three holes and Hilea notched three birdies as each grabbed a share of 30th place. The remainder of the Paladin team, however, managed just one birdie over 18 holes.
Purdue (-4) holds a two-stroke first round lead over Alabama (-2) while Georgia (+3) and Duke (+3) are tied for third after round one. Duke's Aleja Cangrejo (-2) and Florida State's Hannah Thomson (-2) shared the opening round lead at two-under 70.
Second round action is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Furman is slated to tee-off from hole No. 15.
