Palos Verdes, Calif. – Sophomore Laura Wearn carded a one-under 70 on Tuesday to propel the Furman women's golf team to a 302 during second round play at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Tournament at the par-71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.
Furman's 18-over 302 helped the Paladins maintain their hold on eighth place after 36 holes in the 54-hole tournament that includes nine of the top-40 ranked teams in the nation. Second-ranked UCLA (296-287-583) fired the tournament's best round, a three-over 287, on Tuesday to take a two-stroke lead over third-ranked Southern Cal (290-295=585) while Pepperdine (295-291=586) held third place.
Wearn, a native of Charlotte, N.C., birdied five holes, including three on the back nine, to fashion the third best round of the day out of the field of 70 golfers. She moved into a tie for 22nd place just six strokes off of the lead.
The tournament concludes on Wednesday with a shotgun start slated for 10:30 a.m. ET. The Paladins are set to play the final round with the University of Florida and Ohio State.
