Hanahan, S.C. – Furman sophomore Laura Wearn carded an opening round 71 to claim a share of fourth place and help Furman into 14th place at the Cougar Classic at the par-72, 6,210-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club on Sunday.
The Charlotte, N.C., native recorded five first round birdies and overcame a triple bogey at No. 16 to trail tournament leader Courtney Gunter of North Carolina by just two strokes after 18 holes in the 54-hole event.
Senior Stefanie Kenoyer began her round with 13 consecutive pars on her way to a two-over 74 and a share of 27th place..
Furman struggled as a team to a 16-over 304 on Sunday. The Paladins held a share of seventh place after 15 holes, but faltered down the stretch and slipped into 14th place. North Carolina shot a three-under 285 to lead second place Minnesota by four strokes and third place South Carolina by six strokes.
Second round action is set for Monday morning with the final round scheduled to begin with a shotgun start on Tuesday morning.
