Furman Tops Rice 70-53

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Junior Melissa Liebschwager led three Lady Paladins in double-digit scoring as Furman downed Rice 70-53 in basketball action Friday.

Furman started off on fire, building a 16-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Lady Paladins widened their lead to 19 points by the end of the first half, helped by 11 first-half points from sophomore Kali Holtfreter.

The Owls scored the first points of the second half, but were never able to narrow the Lady Paladins' lead to less than 14 points. Furman finished the game with a 70-53 win.

Rice was led by senior Valeriy Berezhynska, who shot 6-15 from the floor and 3-3 from the line for 15 total points. Senior Kadie Riverin added 11 points, while junior Maudess Fulton contributed 12.

The Lady Paladins were led by junior Liebschwager's 15 points. Liebschwager went 6-10 from the floor, including 3-6 3-pointers. Sophomore Holtfreter added 11 points and junior Katie Johnson recorded 10 in the winning effort. Liebschwager also led the team with 5 rebounds.

With the win, the Lady Paladins improve to 3-3 on the season, while Rice falls to 5-4. Furman will take the court again on Wednesday, facing cross-town rival Clemson. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
