Furman Free Throw Barrage Topples UNC-Asheville 79-65
Nov. 26, 2004
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Katie Roach and Jen Nadalin scored 17 points each and Furman connected on a school record 42 free throws to down UNC Asheville 79-65 in women's basketball action Friday night at Timmons Arena.
Roach, a senior forward from Marietta, Ga., converted 13-of-15 free throws and a pair of field goals, while Nadalin, a senior center from Guelph, Ontario, connected on 7-of-12 field goal attempts and 3-of-4 free throws while tallying a game high 10 rebounds in sparking Furman (2-1) to its second win in three nights.
UNC Asheville (0-3) got a game high 23 points from Kristal Hood. Tommi Paris rounded out Furman's double figure scorers with 14 points to go along with six steals.
Furman converted 42-of-49 free throws in the contest, which included 59 fouls and 49 turnovers. The 42 made free throws bested the previous school standard of 35 recorded in an 85-58 win over Charleston Southern during the 1994-95 season. The Lady Paladins' 49 free throw attempts also topped the previous record of 48 attempts notched in a 70-60 triumph over Davidson that same season.
"We were very happy with our team's effort tonight," said Furman head coach Sam Dixon, whose squad drained 33-of-43 free throws in a 76-69 triumph over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night. "We did a much better job competing on the boards, and that was a big improvement over our first two games."
After getting outrebounded 53-36 by Gardner-Webb, Furman came back to claim a 40-32 advantage on the boards over UNC-Asheville, including a 17-9 margin on the offensive glass.
Leading 41-24 at intermission, Furman pushed its lead to 19 points at 46-27 with a Nadalin layup off a Roach assist with 16:54 left in the contest.
UNC Asheville sliced the Lady Paladin advantage to nine points a 57-48 on an Amanda Elder layup with 8:58 to go, but Furman responded with another Nadalin layup 15 seconds later to spark a 7-0 burst that led to a 16-point advantage following a Nadalin free throw at the 8:14 juncture.
The Lady Bulldogs twice reduced Furman's advantage to nine points down the stretch but could get no closer due to strong work at the free throw line by the Lady Paladins.
Furman returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on Clemson at Clemson beginning at 7:00 p.m.
