Furman Tops Tusculum in Home Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Katie Johnson recorded her first double-double of the season to lead the Lady Paladins to a 77-63 victory over Tusculum in basketball action Wednesday.

Johnson went 7-9 from the floor and 3-3 from the line to total 17 points for the Lady Paladins, while also adding 11 rebounds. Two other Furman players also scored in double digits, with junior Katie Agin adding 14 and Kali Holtfreter contributing 11.

Furman got off to a slow start, allowing Tusculum to take a 23-13 lead. The Lady Paladins then went on a 20-5 run to finish out the first half and took the 33-28 lead going into the break.

In the second half, the Lady Paladins battled through four tied scores before taking a 63-53 lead with seven minutes left. Furman held the lead to take the game with a final score of 77-63.

Tusculum was led by freshman Jasmine Gunn with 22 points, while junior Ashli Oliver contributed 19 in the losing effort. Furman out-rebounded the Pioneers 51-32.

With the win, Furman improves to 1-1 on the season, while Tusculum falls to 0-1. The Paladins hit the road this weekend with a trip to Jacksonville State to take on the Gamecocks on Saturday, Nov. 17.
