Greenville, S.C. - Kali Holtfreter scored 14 points and an active Furman defense held Sewanne to just 13 first half points as the Lady Paladins defeated the Tigers 76-39 on Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game.

Holtfreter, a freshman from Hendersonville, Tenn., was 6-for-9 from the floor and made both of her free throw attempts for 14 points off the bench. Furman placed three players in double-figures, as Chrissy Phelps and Katie Johnson reached double-digits with 11 and 14 points, respectively.

Furman held Sewanee to 13 first half points on 3-of-27 shooting from the floor in the first period. The Lady Paladins also forced Sewanee into 19 turnovers, including 15 Furman steals.

Sewanee hit its first shot of the game, a Steffi Renninger three-pointer, but Furman responded with pressure defense and solid ball movement to take an 11 point lead with just over ten minutes remaining on a Holtfreter layup. Furman reached its largest lead of the period at 44-10 with four minutes left in the first half.

Furman held a 48-13 lead at the intermission, and cruised through the second half, building its lead to 47 points on a Holtfreter free throw at 11:39.

Dani Pettay led Sewanee with nine points, and Alden Knowlton added a game-high eight rebounds.

Mollie Petersen had a team-high seven rebounds as Furman earned a 47-32 advantage on the boards. Adrienne Gilmore and Melissa Liebschwager each recorded four assists, as Furman had assists on 18 of its 28 field goals.

Furman opens its regular season on Wednesday as the Lady Paladins play host to Francis Marion at Timmons Arena at 7 p.m.
