Lady Paladins Fall to Western Carolina in Final Regular-Season Road Game
Feb. 17, 2007
Cullowhee, N.C. - Catamount guard Lauren Powell scored 13 points on a 5-of-8 shooting performance and Western Carolina shot 44 percent from the field en route to a 72-48 defeat of the Furman women's basketball team in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center. Furman (9-18, 4-12) dropped its second straight game, while WCU remained atop the league at 19-8, 13-3.
No one scored in double figures for the Lady Paladins with Katie Johnson's nine points leading the way. Johnson knocked down 4-of-5 field goals, pulled in four rebounds and blocked four shots. The Catamounts' Monique Dawson led all scorers with 15 points.
The Lady Paladins started the game on an 8-2 run, before the Catamounts scored 10 of the next 12 points to take the lead back for good at the 15:28 mark of the first half. Furman managed only seven more points in the opening stanza and WCU nailed 4-of-9 from three-point territory to hold a comfortable 35-17 advantage at the break.
The Catamounts scored the first eight points of the second half to lead 43-17 and take away any thoughts of a Lady Paladin comeback. Furman would never get closer than 19 the rest of the way.
Furman struggled from the field, connecting on 20 of its 57 field-goal attempts, only 2-of-15 from downtown. Western also controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Paladins 52-26 in the victory. Furman has yet to win a game when losing the battle on the boards.
The Lady Paladins did play a relatively clean game, tallying a season-low 11 turnovers in the contest, while forcing 17 Western miscues.
Furman will host the Elon Phoenix on Monday, Feb. 19 at the Bi-Lo Center in downtown Greenville. The game is set to tip at 4:30 p.m.
