Women's Basketball Posts Second Straight Road Victory

Spartanburg, S.C. - The Furman women's basketball team picked up its second consecutive road win, edging out the host Wofford Terriers, 51-47, at Benjamin Johnson Arena on Saturday night in Southern Conference basketball action. Furman completes the season sweep of the Terriers and improves to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in the league. Wofford's two-game winning streak came to an end, as it fell to 11-13 on the season, 5-9 in the SoCon.
Paladin junior Chrissy Phelps led all scorers with 17 points on 5-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. The guard also tallied five steals in the win.
Two Terriers scored in double figures, with Liz Miller's 15 leading the way. Kelsi Koenig added 11 points.
Despite a slow-starting first half where both teams combined for 11 made baskets and 29 turnovers, the Lady Paladins found themselves up eight, 22-14, at the break. They quickly increased their lead to 13 on back-to-back buckets to start the second half. The lead hovered in double digits for much of the final half, before the Terriers outscored Furman 13-5 over a six minute span to cut the advantage to two, 49-47, with 43 seconds to play.
Junior guard Adrienne Gilmore connected on two free throws to make it a two-possession game with 19 ticks on the clock. Furman then forced the Terriers' 23rd turnover of the game to seal its second straight win.
Furman shot 33 percent in the contest, including 46 percent in the second half. The Lady Paladins were the better team on the boards, outrebounding the Terriers, 40-34. They also nailed 16-of-20 (80 percent) from the charity stripe, compared to Wofford's 12-of-22 (57 percent) from the line.
The Lady Paladins return home to take on the Chattanooga Mocs on Monday, Feb. 12 at Timmons Arena. The game will be a double-header with the men, with the tip scheduled for 5 p.m.
