Furman Falls at Appalachian State 69-60

Boone, N.C. - Maria Grimes scored 21 points, and Appalachian State outscored Furman 23-0 in fast break points as the Mountaineers held on to defeat Furman 69-60 on Monday night at Holmes Convocation Center.

Grimes connected on 6-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc, and made good on six of her seven free throw attempts to lead the Mountaineers.Whitney Tossie scored 12 points and Whitney Ketner added 11 for Appalachian State.

Furman was led by Kali Holtfreter with 12 points, the third straight game that the freshman has reached double-digits in scoring. Sarah Baker added 11 for the Lady Paladins.

Appalachian State held a 50-40 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the second half when Baker and Holtfreter combined to hit six straight three-pointers. Furman, however, was unable to cut into the Mountaineer lead as Appalachian State forced six Lady Paladin turnovers and grabbed seven offensive rebounds to keep the lead at six points with a minute left.

Furman held a rebounding advantage through most of the game, but the game ended with the Mountaineers holding a 46-37 lead on the boards. Appalachian State outscored Furman 34-8 in the paint and forced the Lady Paladins into 27 turnovers.

The Lady Paladins tied season highs with eight made three-point baskets and three-point field goal percentage (50.0%), but Furman shot just 8-for-39 (20.5%) from inside the arc to keep the Lady Paladins at 29.1 percent from the floor for the game.

With the win, Appalachian State improves to 11-11 on the season, 5-6 in the Southern Conference. Furman falls to 7-15 overall, 2-9 in league play. The Lady Paladins return to action on Saturday as Furman plays host to UNC Greensboro at 3:30 p.m. as part of a Furman basketball doubleheader.
