UNCG Comes From Behind To Down Lady Paladins

GREENSBORO, North Carolina - The UNCG Spartans pieced together a 20-1 run over the final eight minutes to earn a 70-65 come-from-behind victory over the Furman Lady Paladins in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Fleming Gym.
Furman dominated most of the game, leading by as mana as 11 in the first half and 15 in the second. In fact, the Lady Paladins were up 62-47 with 9:24 left to play when the Spartans began their comeback bid. Over the last 9:03 the Lady Paladins committed 11 of their 27 turnovers in the game, and missed eight field goals. The Spartans, meanwhile, were pouring in the points, including a three-pointer by Jasmine Byrd with 1:10 to play which gave UNCG its first lead since the 4:20 mark of the first period.
Greensboro center Ashley Current gets much of the credit for the Spartan comeback. She poured in 16 points and claimed 12 rebounds, including eight offensive boards, and picked up 11 of her points in the second half. In addition, UNCG outrebounded Furman 49-42 for the game and 24-9 on the offensive boards, helping them outscore the Lady Paladins 19-6 on second chance points. UNCG guard Amanda Eaton added 10 points on the night, while Byrd totaled 11, including her timely second-half trey.
The Lady Paladins were paced by guard Tommi Paris, who scored 15 on seven-for-10 shooting from the field and a one-for-two night at the line. Katie Roach added nine points with 10 rebounds, while Jen Nadalin contributed seven points and 11 boards.
With the loss, the Lady Paladins fall to 13-7 overall and 8-5 in the Southern Conference, while UNCG improves to 11-8 overall and 8-4 in league play. Furman returns to action on Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. game at Wofford College.
