Shawnda Atwood scored 17 total points to lift the Lady Eagles to a 59-53 win over the Lady Paladins in SoCon basketball action.
After a six-minute scoreless period for Furman to start the game, junior Katie Agin put the first points on the board for the Lady Paladins with a two-point jumper at the 14-minute mark. The Lady Eagles took a 16-0 lead to start the game, but the Lady Paladins battled back to tie the game at 26 heading into the break, helped by junior Melissa Liebschwager's six points.
The two teams traded points to start the second half, with the score tied at 39 at the 11:30 mark and again at 43 at the 9:40 mark. From there, the Lady Eagles edged ahead and were able to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
Georgia Southern was led by senior Shawnda Atwood's 17 total points, while senior Tiffany Brown added 14 for the Lady Eagles and passed the 1,000 career points mark in the first half.
Junior Sarah Baker led the Lady Paladins with 13 total points, one shy of her season high. Melissa Liebschwager, Kali Holtfreter, and Katie Agin each added eight points to the effort, with Holtfreter also leading the team in rebounds with seven.
With the win, Georgia Southern improves to 9-8 on the season and 5-1 in the Southern Conference, while Furman falls to 5-12 and 0-6 in league play.
The Lady Paladins return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 with a 2:30 matchup against Chattanooga.
