Wofford Holds on to Defeat Furman

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite a strong run by Furman late in the second half, the Wofford Lady Terriers were able to hold on to win a Southern Conference thriller, 78-71.

In a first half that featured five ties and six lead changes, the Lady Paladins led by as many as seven points, helped by sophomore Lee Stephen's 13-point first half and junior Sarah Baker's 12 points, as well as a combined 45.8 shooting percentage. However, the Lady Terriers rallied before the break, taking a two-point lead before the half.

Wofford scored the first points of the second half, and was able to lead for most of the period, before Furman tied the score at 59 and again at 61. The Lady Paladins would be unable to take the lead, despite their best efforts, and Wofford held on to win 78-71.

Liz Miller led the Lady Terriers with 19 total points, while Natalie Gramblin added 13 and Mahagony Williams contributed 12. Wofford shot only 62% from the free throw line, compared to Furman's 89%.

Sophomore Lee Stephens scored a career-best 24 points to lead the Lady Paladins, while junior Sarah Baker notched a season-best 14 total points. The Lady Paladins went 33-37 from the line.

With the loss, the Lady Paladins fall to 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in league play, while the Wofford Lady Terriers improve to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Conference.

Furman will return to action Tuesday, January 8 with their last non-conference matchup of the season against Charleston Southern. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Timmons Arena.
